The National Science Foundation and the Observatory of Vera C. Rubin of the United States Department of Energy have been under construction at the top of Cerro Pachón in Chile since 2015. Accommodation of an 8.4 meter telescope coupled with a 3,200 megapixel camera, the structure now completed will soon undertake the unprecedented insinuations. As it does, the observatory will produce 20 terabytes of huge data every night: an astronomical treasure is mature for mines for the decades to come.
But in the first place, the public will have a taste of what this new astronomical workhorse can do when the observatory releases its first images on Monday 23 June, offering a look at its abilities before starting its full scientific mission. The Ultra-Fe High Definition images promise details and depths that will show the extraordinary capabilities of the largest digital camera ever built.
The images will be shown as part of a press conference starting from 11:00 EDT. You can tune in to watch the live event on the National Science Foundation YouTube channel or capture the built -in feed below:
And if you want to look at the unveiling with others, structures including planetaries, observers and museums around the world host public watches parties in which you can participate. Visit the first page of the Rubin Observatory Festival to find out if there is an event close to you.
These images are only the first step on a journey through space and time, since this long -awaited and avant -garde structure discovers new secrets of the cosmos, from our solar system to the nature of dark matter and dark energy. This is a revenge that you won’t want to lose yourself.
