Ninives, seen in the impression of this artist, was the most populated city of ancient Assyria, as well as its capital. The observers of the city made registers of a solar eclipse in 763 BC
On June 15 763 AC this event is preserved in the Eponymon Canon, a list of historical events made by the Assyrians on clay tablets, following a specialized calendar system. The text observes: “Insurrection in the city of ASSUR. In the month of Sivan, the sun has been eclipse.” This story is a crucial part of the anchoring of the chronology of the ancient Near East; As is probably mentioned in the Bible, historians also used it to improve the chronology of the early biblical times, in particular the eras of the prophets Jonah and Amos.
